Acid Reflux

Acid Reflux is most commonly known as "acidity." It is a state where the contents of your stomach flow back up towards your throat causing heartburn, hiccups, and burning sensation.

Reflux tends to occur after a heavy meal while people are lying down. Suddenly, they start feeling uneasy to an extent that it is uncomfortable to lie down because there is discomfort and pain in the chest. These symptoms are caused when the contents of the stomach travel backwards into the esophagus. Acid reflux is mainly a digestive problem. It leaves a bitter taste in the mouth, and at times it can also be felt in the middle of the back. It is mainly related to improper eating habits.

Causes of Acid Reflux:

The human body has a small "flap" covering the top of the stomach which prevents the stomach contents from traveling back into the esophagus. At times, this "flap" does not function properly and allows acidic stomach contents to travel back into the esophagus causing a burning sensation.

The factors responsible for acid reflux are: eating heavy meals, smoking, pregnancy, and being overweight.

To avoid such problems, women should eat a healthy diet full of iron, calcium, and protein during these important months to insure good health for the mother and baby.
